Did you know about 7.2 million people in Australia experience incontinence? That's almost 1 in 3 people. Luckily, having the right support and strategies in place can help you understand and manage incontinence so that everyday activities can be enjoyable again.
Incontinence can look different for different people:
- Urinary incontinence: involuntary or accidental loss of urine (wee)
- Bowel incontinence: involuntary or accidental loss of faeces (poo) or wind (flatus). This may include finding it hard to control when and where a person passes faeces (poo) or noticing stains in underwear (soiling)
Incontinence can affect confidence and comfort in daily life, and talking to a qualified health professional is an important first step toward feeling more in control.
If you would prefer to speak to someone over the phone first, you can call the National Continence Helpline on 1800 33 0066. Through this service, you can receive free, confidential advice from a nurse continence specialist to help you take the next step. Open Monday - Friday, 8 am - 8 pm (Vic time).
Here are some tips to help you prepare for your appointment with a health professional:
- Write down a list of questions you may want to ask your doctor
- Record:
- your symptoms and how often they happen
- what makes symptoms better or worse
- the types of fluid, and how much fluid you drink
- how often you go to the toilet
- any medications, vitamins or supplements you are currently taking
- You may want to request for a longer appointment so that you have the time to talk without feeling rushed.

Wholegrains have many benefits to our health. This includes:
- Gut health- wholegrains contain fibre which can help prevent constipation and bowel cancer risk
- Heart Health- Wholegrains can create a health gut microbiome which promotes heart health, oats can help lower blood cholesterol
- Blood sugar control- Slower to digest, reducing insulin spikes will help prevent Type 2 Diabetes
- Regular Eating- Wholegrains are filling, which can reduce overeating and promote regular eating
How can I eat more wholegrains?
- Start the day with wholegrains- breakfast ideas include muesli, porridge, oats, or wholegrain toast
- Snack smart- Snack ideas include wholegrain crackers, popcorn, wholemeal crumpet or a smoothie with oats
- Explore different grains- Different types of grains include quinoa, wild rice, buckwheat or freekah.
- Try half and half- Start small with trying one piece of wholegrain read with 1 piece of white bread, or white and wholemeal pasta, or brown and white rice
- Check the label- Look for words such as "wholemeal, wholegrain, wholewheat" and ingredients such as " brown rice, oats, sorghum, quinoa, or buckwheat
